Empty Can Test

The empty can test is also known as the Jobe test. It is used as a test of the rotator cuff muscles, especially the supraspinatus muscle on the top part of the shoulder. In this test, the patient is tested at 90° elevation in the scapular plane and full internal rotation (empty can). The patient resists downward pressure exerted by the examiner at the patients elbow or wrist. A positive test indicates a tear to the supraspinatus tendon or muscle and can also indicate a neuropathy of the suprascapular nerve.
