Case Presentation #20
This patient is a 66-year-old man, who experienced sudden onset aphasia and dysarthria that was witnessed by his wife. Local EMS arrived within 20 minutes, recognized the signs of stroke, and transported him to the hospital. On examination, he had global aphasia, right homonymous hemianopsia and right-sided hemiplegia. The patient was rapidly transported to CT for advanced imaging. Noncontrast CT revealed left-sided ischemic infarction. Further evaluation showed new onset atrial fibrillation. He was discharged home on hospital day 7 on warfarin and plans for outpatient rehabilitation therapy. He went to the stroke rehabilitation center where combination therapy program (conventional rehabilitation combined with virtual reality rehabilitation) was planned for him. This program included Recovery Tech VR game based rehabilitation to improve motor function in affected upper extremity. At 90 days, the patient was nearly back to normal life and was able to do ADL.
