Case Presentation #13
We are presenting a case of 49-year old male with left hemiparesia as a result of radiation induced stroke twelve hours before admission to the Hospital. He suffered from brain cancer 14 months ago and received several sessions of radiation therapy and chemotherapy as well.
The available literature indicates an approximate overall doubling of the subsequent stroke risk in cancer patients given radiotherapy.
The patient underwent physical examination, then brain CT scan at ER that showed right sided ischemic stroke.
After discharge he was referred to the physiotherapy clinic where combination rehabilitation therapy including conventional therapy and “Recovery Tech” virtual reality game based rehabilitation therapy scheduled for him. After eight weeks therapy fortunately upper extremity motor function improved significantly (there was significant improvements in Brunnstrom Recovery Stage (from “4” to “5”), so that he was able to do activity of daily life. There were no adverse effects.
